New Hercules vid: Holding Out For A Hero
27th-Feb-2006 11:30 am
The Escapade vidshow is over, and I can post my vid, yay! All kinds of comments welcome, criticism definitely included.

Many thanks to falzalot for giving me the song, when I mentioned that I wanted to do a Twanky vid. I couldn't resist. And more thanks to elynross, flambeau and Thing 1 and 2 of flummery for beta'ing and for not beating my head in when I first told them what I wanted to do.

Title: Holding Out For A Hero
Performed by: Jennifer Saunders
Fandom: Hercules: the Legendary Journeys
Description: Widow Twanky demands perfection! And she will seek it out, even if that means personally inspecting -- ahem.

Big (.avi, 25 Mb, 720x480) | Small (.avi, 6.6 Mb, 320x240) -- right-click and save, please!

I recommend installing the free VLC player to play this vid (and just about any vid you can find). If you have trouble, this guide will help.

Your own hotlink protection seems to be breaking the links.
27th-Feb-2006 10:55 am (UTC)
Yeah, thanks! I have been fixing. LJ changed all the naaames...*g*

It should be OK now.
27th-Feb-2006 11:00 am (UTC)
I absolutely adored this. Loved it so much.

I still can't believe the Widow Twanky eps aired on American TV. I mean, what crack were tptb on?

You're very close to convincing me I can afford to buy more Herc DVDs.

But yes. Wonderful vid. Thanks for sharing it:)
27th-Feb-2006 11:14 am (UTC)
Eee, thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. And yeah, I agree about the crack. Definitely.

But then, considering they aired the episode where Hercules turned into a pig...*G*

Got here through Caralchameleon's rec. Im not even into the Herculese fandom, but man that was a great vid. I'd forotten how good that man looks without a shirt. Or anything at all. That ep looked like a lot of fun - but alas I've never seen it.

Excellent work
27th-Feb-2006 12:10 pm (UTC)
Thank you! And yeah, there was just no shame in how many times they had Hercules take his kit off. Gotta love them for that. :-D
27th-Feb-2006 02:52 pm (UTC)
Mary, what codec did you use here? I can't play either version! eeek!
27th-Feb-2006 02:55 pm (UTC)
Eeeek! That's not supposed to happen! *is woeful*

I used xvid, but it's supposed to be compatible with divx, too. Won't it play in VLC either?

Thanks for telling me. If this doesn't work out, I may have to put up a separate divx version.

I adore this more everytime I see it. Thank you SO MUCH for this!

I showed it to my roommate last night, and she about fell over. :->
27th-Feb-2006 04:53 pm (UTC)
Aww, yay! And thank you right back! *beams*
27th-Feb-2006 05:48 pm (UTC)
*adoration and glee!!*
27th-Feb-2006 05:52 pm (UTC)
Yay! *beams*
27th-Feb-2006 06:18 pm (UTC)
I got here via therienne's rec -- and I'm glad that I did.

what a hoot. I especially liked the "I dream of what I need" and then the cut to the steam... Def. a keeper for my vid folder
27th-Feb-2006 06:21 pm (UTC)
Oh, yay! Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for telling me about a bit you especially liked - that's great feedback to get.
27th-Feb-2006 06:23 pm (UTC)
Bless you for the small version, which I should have completely downloaded in...two or three more hours. *sigh*

::loves Widow Twanky::
27th-Feb-2006 06:28 pm (UTC)
Oh, ouch. I hope all goes well with the download. *thinks speedy thoughts*
27th-Feb-2006 07:23 pm (UTC)
Wild, wild applause!

I am in awe. Struck with wonder.
And currently rolling around on the floor snorting with laughter ... *G*

So many moments, so many strikes on the perfect beat. And Ares. Drunk Zeus. Hee!

I am now feeling an overwhelming urge to watch 'And Fancy Free ...' again.

27th-Feb-2006 07:33 pm (UTC)
Yay! Thank you, you make me grin like a loon. I loved making this vid, but knowing that people are watching it and laughing where I wanted them to is just the best part. *beams*
27th-Feb-2006 07:33 pm (UTC)
Oh my gosh - this was fantastic! It was so incredibly funny, even sitting alone at my computer - I can't imagine how great it would have been to see it in a room full of fans. I'm not sure where to begin with what I loved; I've never seen Hercules so it's all totally out of context for me, but it's like the show was made just for this vid. I love that you used this song, too, which can be so badly vidded and yet you (to quote Randy Jackson!) "made it your own, dawg!" Hee.

One of the things I love best about it is how you copied the Shrek 2 movements and stylings of the song (like the the beginning, with the "wand" and the guy playing piano). I swear, it's like the show did that on purpose just so you could make the connection. That was awesome.

Some of my favorite parts (amongst a vid entirely of favorite parts) - the dancing in that warm light (hysterical - like every dance movie I've ever seen, they all have that sexy tango in the warm light scene); the bird falling on Ares' (I think) head; all the movement and quick cutting once the music picks up, you have a delightful sense of timing. The "sweep me off my feet" where he drops her - I laughed loudly at that. And the leap in the air at 2:30 was brilliant.

I even love the font you used for your titles. It's perfect. Just a joy, the whole way through. It was over too soon. Thank you for sharing!
27th-Feb-2006 07:47 pm (UTC)
Oh, that is such lovely feedback, I'm grinning from ear to ear. Thank you so much! I really tried to de-contextualize this vid, so it wouldn't be full of Hercules in-jokes, and I'm so glad that it worked for you despite not knowing the show. (One thing that may be lost for non-fans is that Twanky is Michael Hurst, who also plays Iolaus, Hercules' best friend. That's just icing on the cake for me.)

I wish I could've been there to see it play at Escapade, but on the other hand, I would've been too nervous to enjoy the vidshow. Heh.

I swear, it's like the show did that on purpose just so you could make the connection.

Heee. I was lucky in that the show had several song-and-dance numbers starring Twanky, so there was lots of stuff like that to play with. I desperately wanted something like that baton scene, and there it was! *g*

Thanks for telling me about which bits worked best for you, I love hearing that. And you love the font! Yay! :-D

the bird falling on Ares' (I think) head

Yes! This was one of the bits we kept going back and forth about, so I'm glad to hear it was a highlight for you.

And just...whee! Thank you!
27th-Feb-2006 08:10 pm (UTC)
Finally, finally in this crazy day I got a chance to see this! I really needed this today, and it was excellent! It's so funny, and charmingly dotty, kind of like the Widow Twankey herself. It reminds me of why I love this show. I need to watch it again a couple of times to pick out the bits I loved best, but I wanted to give you my first impression while I had a chance. Yay!
27th-Feb-2006 08:14 pm (UTC)
Yay! If it helped cheer up your day, then I'm jazzed. And yay! I love that you called it 'charmingly dotty'. Heeee.
27th-Feb-2006 08:36 pm (UTC)
It took me two tries, but wow. I love your H:tLJ vids. This one was just perfect --- you had me from the "where are all the gods?" line. The first clip of Hercules on the catwalk was so perfectly timed, with the coat twirling in time to the beat, that I jumped in glee.
27th-Feb-2006 09:00 pm (UTC)
Hey, thank you so much! *beams*

Did it take two tries to download, or? If anything's wonky, let me know.

I do love that moment on the catwalk. And Twanky's reaction. Heee.

27th-Feb-2006 09:02 pm (UTC)

And the.

Nice legs, Widow Twanky.

*has fit of hysterics*
27th-Feb-2006 09:07 pm (UTC)
*giggles at you* Yay! Hysterics = good.
27th-Feb-2006 10:33 pm (UTC)
I saw this at Escapade and I've never laughed so hard in my life - wonderful job!
28th-Feb-2006 09:09 am (UTC)
Oh, yay! Thank you! I wasn't at Escapade, so this is lovely to hear.
28th-Feb-2006 02:17 am (UTC)
Oh, this was so much fun! I've never seen Hercules, but the movement and color and, well, the CRACKTASTIC idea just won me over. It just looks so shiny, and you really go with the flow of the song in the most song flowy and comedic ways. It's such great fun. I'm giggling away.
28th-Feb-2006 09:10 am (UTC)
*beams* Thank you! And yeah. Cracktastic is the word. *G*
28th-Feb-2006 03:17 am (UTC)
Fantastic editing! I have a huge grin on my face. Well done indeed.
28th-Feb-2006 09:12 am (UTC)
Thank you so much!
28th-Feb-2006 03:29 am (UTC)
::giggling:: I laughed myself into aching ribs and leaking eyes over this one. The grapes, and the dancing, and Ares, and oh, it was perfect, thank you!
28th-Feb-2006 09:12 am (UTC)
Hee hee. I just love people's reactions to this. Yay!
28th-Feb-2006 06:40 am (UTC)
Eeeee! I was ROTFL and drooling at the same time -- not a pretty sight. ;)
28th-Feb-2006 09:13 am (UTC)
Well, I'm glad to hear it nonetheless. Hee. *uses porn icon just for you*
28th-Feb-2006 11:53 am (UTC)
Wow! Just wow! What a great vid! Watched it four times in a row now and it's just perfect. Your clip choices work so amazingly with the music. I particularly love the cut from mooning Twankey to smouldering Herc. Or when she comes floating down from the roof. Or the bit where she rises with the "Aah!" Or the bit where the music slows down for a tender moment between them. Or when the women are chasing Herc. In short: *loves*

My (or yours, I should say) icon has never been more appropriate. *g*
28th-Feb-2006 12:02 pm (UTC)
HEE. I'd forgotten about that icon! One of the first I ever made. It's like it was made for the vid.

Thank you for your lovely comments! Mooning Twanky and smouldering Herc, heee.
28th-Feb-2006 02:13 pm (UTC)
It`s fantastic! I can`t stop gaping at it and laughing. I`d love to point my favorite moments but it`s impossible to stick with only few. From the very first 'where have all good men gone" every next line keeps getting better and better until the grapes culmination. And Twanky`s little sigh after "I dream of what I need"! Dancing Echidna! And Herc knocking a bucket of water over himself along with "like a fire in my blood" chorus. What a vid!

Also, it was very thoughtful of you to provide lyrics, I wouldn`t understand half as much without subtitles I made of them.
28th-Feb-2006 02:37 pm (UTC)
Yay, thank you! *beam* So glad you enjoyed it.

I do so love Twanky's little sigh. Really a lot. Well, obviously I love every shot in this vid or it wouldn't be in there, but the little sigh, and the suggestive circling of her shotglass with the tip of her finger, oh man.

Also, it was very thoughtful of you to provide lyrics, I wouldn`t understand half as much without subtitles I made of them.

Yeah, I remembered to add links to lyrics after first reading on the Russian list that people were making subtitles for vids, and it's no trouble.
28th-Feb-2006 03:11 pm (UTC)
Oh. My. God... here by referral from ltlj and while I never watched Hercules I've seen enough bits (just from fannish vids) to know who the players are and figured it was seriously camp... but your vid just blew the doors off any doubt! and the cracktasticness of it and... and... the excellently matched music and choreography. All the ace bits have already been mentioned so I won't repeat them other to mirror the praise! now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go watch it again!
28th-Feb-2006 03:23 pm (UTC)
Heee. Thank you! I love that you took a chance on the vid, and yes. This was my chance to celebrate the camptasticness of Hercules: the Legendary Journeys in general and the Twanky episodes in particular. :-D
28th-Feb-2006 03:46 pm (UTC)

Loved it. One of the better fanvids I've seen, so much so that I'll be torturing my poor wittle laptop and saving the hunky goodness right where it belongs.

Have I mentioned yet how much I adore your work? XD
28th-Feb-2006 03:50 pm (UTC)
P.S. You've been pimped! ^.^
28th-Feb-2006 03:48 pm (UTC)
Um. Wow. I kept on getting distracted and going, “wait, did they just…?” but this was absolutely marvellous. I loved the lip syncing at the beginning and the fade between the her musings over the bottle rim and the beefcake at 0:40. And then dear sweet lord of fuzzy creatures was that break dancing? … sorry. Distracted again. I couldn't believe half of the beefcake poses they got Kevin Sorbo into. The ending with the twirling parasol and the split leaps… did they do their own stunts? Did he shave his legs?
28th-Feb-2006 03:55 pm (UTC)

Thank you, I love your comments, and can only imagine what it's like seeing this stuff for the first time.

Michael Hurst did indeed shave his legs to be Twanky. He also directed Hercules' breakdancing, and several slo-mo beefcake shots. In short: well done, that man.

(They didn't do all their own stunts, and the more acrobatic dancing is the stunt guys, but a lot of it is them, too. :-D)
28th-Feb-2006 04:44 pm (UTC)
Oh my GOD, that's brilliant! Good job!
28th-Feb-2006 05:46 pm (UTC)
Thank you! Yay!
28th-Feb-2006 09:15 pm (UTC)
nicci_mac recced your vid, and I have to say, it's amazing. I'll have to sit down and rewatch some eps now. Could I show your vid at Revelcon? It's a small, multifandom con in Texas. I have a feeling it would go over very well. Great job, and thanks for sharing it with us.
28th-Feb-2006 09:25 pm (UTC)
Hey, thank you for the comments - and yes, if you want to show it at Revelcon, that would be fine with me, and I'm flattered! Do you want me to send you the DVD-ready files as I sent them to Escapade (an .m2v and a .wav file)?
